Bacopa
monnieri
This
herb spreads on ground and its stems and small wedge shaped
leaves are succulent i.e. fleshy and borne on light green
succulent branches.The mauve flowers are solitary and are produced
in the axils of leaves. Roots arise on the nodes of the
stem also. This herb grows near marshes, on bunds of paddy
fields and generally in wet places. It also called Moniera
cunefolia belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae. The entire
plant is used in medicine and forms a reputed nerve and heart
tonic. The plant contains an
alkaloid Bramhine, which provides strength and tone to the heart.

Other medicinal plants found in Kerala are as follows Acalypha
indica.Acorus Calamus, Adhatoda vasaka, Aegle marmelos, Andrographis
paniculata, (kirayat.)Azadirachta indica, Boerhavia diffusa,(Punarnava
Thazuthama). Cassia auriculata Gloriosa superba(mo thonni) Hydrocotyle
asiatica, Hydnocarpus kurzii(marotti). Lawsonia intermis (henna).
Ocimum sanctum.Phyllanthus niruri, Rauvolfia serpentina.
Saraca asoca. Sida cordifolia.Solanum nigrum, Tinospora
cordifolia

A
twining plant with many, long, fleshy roots. Leaves in
opposite pairs, 5-10 cm long, ovate, usually pointed at
tip. The specific name asthmatica indicates the use of
the plan leaves in asthma .It is reputed as it cures
child asthma.Leaves contains alkaloids
tylophorine and tylophorinine which causes dermatitis.
The medicine is used in Ayurveda and in Homeopathy as

It
is a medium sized tree, belonging to the natural order
of Loganiaceae. The plant is first described by Linneaus
in 1753.The medicine nux vomica is prepared from the seeds
which possess intensely and persistently very bitter taste
and contain strychnine and brucine(the alkaloids
are present not only in the seeds ,but also in roots,
wood, bark, leaves ,fruit pulp ,and the hard fruit shells.
The ash grey circular seeds remain in the fruit,
which is very much like a ripe orange, in colour and appearance.
The medicine is used in Ayurveda,Homeopathy, and allopathy. |
